How is mental health defined?

Mental health is a term we hear a lot in the modern world, and it refers to the overall state of our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing. The wellbeing of our mental health enables us to

  • cope with life's stressors
  • perform well at work, or in educational settings
  • recognise our potential
  • learn new skills and progress
  • maintain healthy relationships
  • function within a community

If our mental health is impacted negatively, we might not be able to think, feel, and react to life’s ups and downs in a way that allows us to progress and/or sustain the life we want to lead.

It’s completely normal for us to struggle with our emotions sometimes, but, for most people, difficult emotions are temporary, and will pass without having a significant impact on their life. However, when intense emotions are continuous, and start to negatively impact the trajectory of our lives, mental health conditions can develop.

What are mental health problems?

The majority of people will experience issues with their mental health at some point in their lives. Mental health problems affect approximately 1 in 4 people a year, and these issues can range from the more common conditions, such as depression and anxiety, to relatively rare conditions, like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Experiencing mental health issues can be upsetting, disorientating, and frightening. Reaching out for support and care might feel like admitting ‘weakness’, or it might feel like an overreaction – asking for help is neither of those things; it’s brave, it’s valid, and it’s a human right.
